British Extends Methanol Poisoning Alert List with 11 Nations
The UK Foreign Office has placed eleven new nations to its official alert list about the threats of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.
This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just last month, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of serious incidents including the deadly death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of methanol can result in blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for drinking.
While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Government minister a senior official emphasized that all travellers should recognize the signs of methanol contamination.
"While having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.
"Should anything feels off, such as a hangover that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
