Football Roundup: Broncos Edge Hapless Jets in Defensive Affair
In a defensive struggle this weekend, the Denver Broncos clinched a close victory over the winless New York Jets. Signal-caller Bo Nix threw an early scoring strike and specialist Wil Lutz kicked the late decisive three-pointer to seal the ugly win.
Defensive Performance Wins Contest
Despite registering nine sacks versus Jets quarterback Justin Fields, the Broncos were behind 11-10 after giving up a safety in the third quarter. Remarkably, the Jets could only produce a mere 82 total net yards during the contest.
The Denver quarterback, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 174 yards, engineered a decisive 12-play, 65-yard possession that ended with Lutz's 27-yard kick with just over five minutes left.
Record Struggles for Jets Attack
In spite of their horrendous offensive display, the Jets still had the ball with a chance to drive for a possible winning score. But Fields was sacked on fourth-and-eight from the Denver 44 after coach Aaron Glenn chose to go for it rather than calling on specialist Nick Folk for a difficult field-goal attempt.
Fields had difficulties throughout, completing just 9 of 17 attempts for 45 yards. The Jets ended up with negative ten net yards passing, the fewest in any contest since 1998.
"The aerial attack was non-existent," Glenn commented following the contest.
